Over the past 170 years, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland and the local community have made a monumental impact by providing a place to grow mental and physical wellness as well as create social and educational advancements for the entire community. Founded in 1854 by Henry Sherwin, co-founder of Sherwin-Williams, the YMCA has a long and impactful history of serving the Greater Cleveland community, which continue today. Below are just a few examples of these achievements:

A Legacy of Education and Social Impact: The YMCA has been instrumental in the education of immigrants and underprivileged individuals. Sereno Fenn, a pivotal figure in the YMCA's history and a longtime board chair, helped establish Fenn College, which ultimately evolved into Cleveland State University in 1964. This transformation not only highlights the YMCA's commitment to accessible education but also its lasting influence on the educational landscape of our region.

Historical Innovations: From its inception, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland has been at the forefront of community innovation. It was the first YMCA in the country to dedicate a building exclusively for boys, responded to the urgent needs of the city by constructing bathhouses for the impoverished, and pioneered the creation of community centers in immigrant neighborhoods.

These initiatives reflect the YMCA's dedication to addressing societal challenges and improving community well-being.

Support During Wartime: Throughout its history, the YMCA has provided unwavering support for military personnel and their families during conflicts, starting from the Civil War to the present day. It established the "Soldiers' Home" during the Civil War and has continued to offer vital services, including job placement and emotional support for veterans. This long-standing commitment showcases the YMCA's role as a community anchor during times of crisis.

Commitment to Youth Development: The YMCA has significantly impacted youth development in Cleveland, with programs designed to empower young people to become responsible and engaged adults. With recent increases in youth participation, the YMCA continues to adapt and innovate to meet the needs of today's youth, emphasizing leadership, health, and social responsibility.

Volunteers: The Heart of the YMCA: The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is a volunteer-driven organization, reliant on community members’ dedication to fulfill its mission. Notable volunteers like Henry Sherwin have shaped its history, and countless others have contributed their time and expertise to support various programs and initiatives. The role of volunteers is integral to the YMCA’s ongoing success and impact in the community.

In celebration of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland’s milestone 170th anniversary, one lucky winner and three guests will receive 170 minutes of free pickleball court time at its brand-new Pickleball Center in North Royalton, located at 13700 York Rd, North Royalton, OH 44133.
